Child labour

Posted by Mr Sloan on November 16, 2009

Have a look at this slideshow from Oxfam. It tells Mara’s story. She is a 12 year old girl who lives in India. Read about it and leave a comment – what could we do to help?

I think the *best* thing to do is to make sure that we buy only items that we know are produced by fairly compensated adults. Unfortunately, most people would not like to pay for many items, including clothing, that are made in countries that have strict laws concerning work regulations. Honestly, I think the only answer is to try to change people’s minds about the importance of having a lot of “stuff” and at the same time to make them realize that people suffer so that we can buy this “stuff.” Presentations like this one help make people understand that their purchasing decisions affect real people, and that is a good place to start.
