Freeze frames in 2HD

We are getting so carried away with Jack and the Beanstalk! Let us explain what we are doing in these photographs. We were thinking about what the charaters might say or think so we did a ‘freeze frame’ to help us. The characters even included the beanstalk, clouds, gold coins, the chicken and the harp. They also made us think more about our story writing and it helped us to improve it. The storyboards are nearly ready so keep checking the blog.

Jack and the Beanstalk – What are we up to in 2JS?

We have been VERY busy in the last couple of weeks. We have been working hard in groups of three on our big project for the half term. So how does it all work?

  • First we split the story of Jack and the Beanstalk into 10 parts. Each group of three children took a part of the story.
  • In our groups we are doing lots of drama, art and talking about the story, about the characters and about the settings. We have been thinking especially about the reasons why different characters behaved in the way that they did – why did Jack’s mum send Jack to sell the cow and not go herself? Why does the old woman live with the Giant? Who is the old man who gives Jack the magic beans?
  • We designed stage sets which we are now making into 3d story-boards. You can see how far we have got at the in the photos above.
  • We are also writing scripts in our groups. We are thinking about the section of the story that we have designed, and are trying to include lots of detail, description and interesting words. You can see some of our writing here Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 5
  • Our next jobs are to practice reading our scripts, deciding on who will take on which roles. We will record ourselves next week.
  • We need to photograph our finished boxes, complete with characters that we will make.
  • Finally we will put it all together into a film which we will put on the blog… Keep checking!

What do you think of our work? What do you like? What could we improve on?

Grimm tales trip

Today Year two visited the Library Theatre in Manchester. We saw an amazing production of Grimm Tales by Carol Ann Duffy. The cast performed lots of different stories and played some great music too. What did you enjoy about our trip? Leave us a comment!

Hotseating Mr Wolf from Tony Ross’ “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”

Today some children in our class took on the role of Mr Wolf from Tony Ross’ version of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”. In this version of the story, the wolf is not really the baddie, but is misunderstood by the villagers who try to kill him. Here is what she said (as Mr Wolf) when the class asked her questions.

2JS Class assembly

We did it! One week until the summer holidays, but weren’t the children great! I am really proud of all of the children in my class, and really sad that they will be leaving on their own voyage into Year 3. Good luck 2JS!

Please tell us what you think of our assembly. What were your favourite bits? What could have been better?
If the video keeps stopping and starting, it is worth “buffering” it for a few minutes first. Press play, then press pause and wait a minute or two. This lets the video load up a bit before you start playing it.

2JS Class assembly ideas. What do you think?

2JS are doing a class assembly in a few weeks. We have been reading Terry Jones’ excellent book Eric The Viking. We are going to try using Voicethread to come up with our own exciting chapter which we can write together and then perform. This is the first step.
Top tip – remember everyone in 2JS needs to be able to join in, so how could we get lots of characters involved?

What should the basic story be? Don’t forget to include the settings, characters, problems and solutions…

Little Leap Forward

After the holiday Year Two will be visiting the Royal Exchange Theatre. We are going to see a show called Little Leap Forward. The show, which is put on by the excellent Horse and Bamboo Theatre company, uses puppets and music to tell the true story of the Chinese flautist Guo Yue. It is based on a book which has been published recently by Barefoot books. If you would like to learn about how the show has been put together, follow the link below. You can also watch a video of Guo Yue reading the story. I’m really looking forward to our theatre visit now.
