Planet Earth – our questions.

In the next 3 weeks, Year 2 will be creating non-chronological reports about Planet Earth. They will have sub-headings such as “Animals” or “weather” and will be made up of information and images that the children find.

As a starting point, we thought of some questions which the children would like to find answers to. Here are some of their questions:

Human beings

Animals

Weather

Our Solar System

The Moon

Geography

Can you find any answers? Please add them as a comment or a sticky. You might find the links at the bottom right of the blog helpful

Re-telling fairytales in 2JS

This week the children in 2JS chose a fairytale they enjoyed and re-told it. I didn’t give them any help! Here are three examples. What do you think? I’m sure the authors would love to hear what you enjoyed as well as what they could improve on.

Now for Emily’s. Now Emily decided to change her story quite a bit, but I think she did a great job of staying close enough to the traditional version whilst still being VERY imaginitive! Can you tell which story she changed?

Peer marking in 2JS

Today we looked at our writing in lots of detail. We were checking some recent work and looking for things like how well we used dialogue, description and punctuation. We thought about whether our writing made sense, and whether we were joining our letters.

To help with this, we swapped books and looked at each others’ work too. Was it useful? What do you need to improve in your writing? Leave a comment.

Traditional tale activities

Have a look at these activities. Can you sequence the stories and describe the characters?

Storyboard scripts – finished in 2JS!

Here are our finished scripts. Each child in each group chose a colour for themselves to help them remember which is their part. They are practicing their parts over the weekend, and we will begin to record them on Monday. Does the story make sense?
What do you think of their hard work?

Can you help some of my class finish writing a story?

Group 10 from our storyboard project are VERY good writers. However, they didn’t quite get to the end of the story today…

Can you help them to finish off? Can you suggest some interesting descriptive sentences or some exciting dialogue? Leave a comment with your ideas please.

Guided writing in Year 2

Here are the first 7 examples of writing done in 2JS this week. These are part of our storyboard project (see the post below). I think the children did a fantastic job working in their groups of three. They came up with imaginative, interesting, and clever ways to tell their part of the story.

What do you like about their work?

What could they improve?

Can you use speech marks?

This week we have been looking at dialogue. We have thought about what the characters in Jack and the Beanstalk might say, and beginning to use speech marks to write it down.

Have a go at this activity. You have to add speech marks in the right places. To add speech marks using a computer keyboard, just hold the shift key and press the 2 key once. Good luck

Add the speech marks

For bonus points, why not print off what you do and bring it in to school?

Mr Wolf’s story

Today we looked at Tony Ross’ version of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”. The wolf isn’t so mean in this version. This is what Palvasha thinks he might say if he was to explain himself:

I am nice but people dont see it.I am so sad that my parents are dead.I am sad because i have no family and i am so sad about that.I am very cross with the villagers because the villagers killed my wolf family.I want to kill them and see if they like it.
